World Championships
At the first world championship in 1958, the official program included only an individual race . The Swedish biathletes in it became triumphs - Adolf Wiklund and Ulle Gunneriusson won gold and silver medals, respectively. A year later , Sven Agge became a bronze medalist in the same discipline. At the first two official relay races in 1966 and 1967 , the Swedes became the third twice. The next success came only in 1974 , Torsten Wadman won the bronze medal in the first sprint of the World Cup. Then, for 33 years, Swedish men did not climb the podium of the World Cup.
In 1985 , at the second women's world championship, Eva Korpela brought the first medal to the Swedish women's team, she won the bronze medal in the individual race, and a year later, became the winner in this type of program. In 1986, the first relay medal was won - silver, in 1987 the success was repeated, and in 1988 the athletes won the bronze. The next heyday of the Swedish biathlon had to wait until the second half of the 1990s . World's strongest biathlete Magdalena Forsberg , from 1996 to 2001, won six gold, one silver and five bronze world championships, but the rest of Sweden was very far from such heights.
The overall level of the Swedish biathlon rose by the mid -2000s . Anna-Karin Olofsson-Zidek won three personal medals at the 2005 and 2007 championships . And the Swedish team with the participation of Olofsson, Helena Junsson , Björn Ferry and Karl-Johan Bergman won the gold medal in the mixed relay - the first gold in the relay in the history of Sweden and the first medal of the men's team since 1974. These same athletes have high chances to show good results at the 2009 World Cup .
