Biography
The son of a well-known literary critic, publicist and leader of the Russian revolutionary movement Suren Spandaryan [1] .
In the 20s of the XX century, he became one of the first enthusiasts of the development of basketball, volleyball and rugby in the USSR, participated in the Moscow championships in these sports, was the first chairman of the Moscow rugby section [2] [3] . He further focused on basketball. In 1923-1926 he played for KIM (Moscow) , in 1927-1940 for Dynamo (Moscow) . In 1937, being a playing coach of Dynamo, he became the USSR champion in basketball.
In the early 1940s he participated in the Great Patriotic War . For military merits, he was awarded the Order of the Red Star [4] .
Since 1947, Stepan Spandaryan has been a coach. In 1947, he was a coach of the USSR men's team , having won the European Championship at its debut continental championship. In 1948-1949, the first coach was the first male and then the female team Dynamo (Moscow) . Under his leadership, the men's team became the champion of the USSR in 1948, and the women's team won the USSR Cup in 1949. In 1951-1952 and 1956-1961 he headed the coaching staff of the USSR men's team. During these years, the USSR team won four times at the European Championships (1951, 1957, 1959, 1961) and three times became the silver medalist of the Olympic Games (1952, 1956, 1960). In 1959, the USSR national team was close to winning the world title , but for political reasons refused to enter the match against the Taiwan team and was disqualified [5] .
In 1965-1966 , Stepan Spandaryan coached the men's national team of Chile . Later he worked in the basketball department of the Sports Committee of the USSR , was an instructor in the sports games department of MGS Dynamo. Over the years, he was a member and chairman of the presidium of the Basketball Federation of the USSR , chairman of the All-Union Coaching Council. He was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor .
Wife - Soviet athlete and basketball player, champion and record holder of the USSR Ella Mitsis (1912-2002).
