List of UEFA European Champions Cup and Champions League finals

The UEFA Champions League is an annual football tournament founded in 1955 [1] . Winners of football championships of countries that are members of the UEFA (Union of European Football Associations), with the exception of Liechtenstein , which does not have its own championship, as well as clubs that took second to fourth places in the strongest European championships, take part in the UEFA Champions League draw [2] . The current winner of the tournament is Liverpool , who beat Tottenham Hotspur in the 2019 final with a 2-0 score in regular time.

From the first draw of 1955/56 until the 1990/91 season, the tournament was called the European Cup ( Eng. European Cup ) [1] . Initially, only winners of national championships, as well as a club that won the previous tournament, were allowed to participate in the Cup. This principle was changed in 1997, when teams taking second place in the strongest European championships [3] were allowed to participate in the tournament, and the winner of the tournament ceased to automatically receive the right to participate in the next draw. The rules for participation were again changed in 2005, when the current champion, Liverpool , received permission to participate in the tournament [4] . The first final of the European Cup was held in 1956 in France , at the Park de Princes stadium. Real Madrid beat Reims 4-3 .

In the 1991/92 season, the tournament was called the “ Amstel Champions League” and changed the format [5] , making a departure from the Olympic system in the form of a group tournament. This was the first Champions League draw; Then the anthem and the emblem of the tournament appeared, which are still used today. Since the 1992/93 season, the tournament has been called the UEFA Champions League .

The club, having won the Champions League five times or three times in a row, gets the cup, which is awarded to the winners, for eternal storage [6] . Currently, only six teams have received this privilege: Real Madrid , Ajax , Bayern , Milan , Liverpool , Barcelona .

Real Madrid holds the record for the number of victories in the tournament, winning it thirteen times. The club also owns the longest series of victories in the finals - he won the first five tournaments (from 1956 to 1960). Also, “Real” is the first club that managed to win the Champions League three times in a row in the new format of the tournament (in 2016 , 2017 and in 2018). “ Juventus ” more often than other teams (7 times) lost in the final matches, “ Bayern ” and “ Benfica ” lost 5 times. Spain is the record holder for the number of victories in the tournament - 18 times, England comes in second with 13 wins [7] . In addition, another curious achievement belongs to England: the tournament was won by 5 different teams from this country, that is, more than from any other [8] .
