The Duke of Devonshire - established in 1694 an English title of nobility , which is the senior representative of the aristocratic surname Cavendish . This branch of the family name is one of the richest and most influential families in England since the 16th century. Only Derby and Marquise of Salisbury could compare with it.

Residence
The construction of the ducal residence, Chatsworth House, began in 1687, the 1st Duke of Devonshire. He attracted the construction of leading architects of his time who were familiar with the continental baroque tradition, William Thalmann and William Archer . The latter also designed a number of garden pavilions, including the famous Waterfall House (1696-1703).
