Geography
Magione is a small town in the western part of Umbria , located about 20 km west of Perugia . Next to it lies Trazimenskoe Lake .
History
The name of the commune comes from the French "maison" (house). At first, this place served as the home of the Templars , who built a fortress here, which has survived to this day and is owned by the Order of Malta .
Among medieval scholars, the castle of Magione is known primarily for the conspiracy drawn up here, a small revolt of minor signors against Cesare Borgia ( 1502 ). Among the famous natives of the city of Giovanni Plano Carpini , a Franciscan monk who was the first European to visit the Mongol Empire a quarter of a century earlier than Marco Polo .
Over the centuries, the castle has hosted some popes , such as Benedict XIV and Pius VII .
