History

Church of Santa Maria Assunta

The surrounding area is inhabited in the late Roman period. In the 1st century BC e. built Poggio Gramignano (also Villa Rustica ), inhabited until the III century BC. e. and in the V century turned into a necropolis, today called the Children's necropolis ( Italian: Necropoli dei bambini ). He appeared as a result of an epidemic of malaria . The necropolis shows the superstition of people about death and stray dead [2] . Some burials are unofficially referred to as vampire ones due to the method of burial [3] . In the summer of 2018, archaeologists discovered the grave of a 10-year-old child. During the burial, a large stone was inserted into the mouth of the deceased in order to, according to legend, “prevent” him from rising from the dead. The child died of malaria, and an abscess developed on his tooth due to illness [4] .

The history of the modern area begins in 1000, when the counts of Montemarte ruled here. Then, from 1147, rule passed to Bovaciani di Todi from Todi . After a brief reign of other clans, from the beginning of the XIV century the area was ruled by Orsini , and since 1370 with the blessing of the Vatican , Tommaso di Alviano from Alviano . In 1449, Pope Pius II ordered to strengthen the defense of the walls. However, in 1497 under Bartolomeo d'Alviano and in 1502 with his brothers Bernardino and Aloisio d'Alviano, the city was conquered by the death of Alviano. After 6 years, the city proclaimed its statute ( Italian: Statuto della Terra di Lugnano ) [5] .
