Army group as a formation arose during the First World War in Russia, Germany and some other countries. The largest number of army groups existed during the Second World War . There were formation data in the postwar period. So, the basis of the combined armed forces of NATO in Europe during the Cold War was two groups of armies that were part of the United Forces of Central Europe (AFCENT, ACCENT):

  • Northern Army Group - SEVAG (NORTHAG),
  • The central group of armies is the CENTAG.

The command of the army group was carried out by the commander with the rank of Field Marshal or Colonel General (in Germany). The first assistant is the chief of staff .

At the beginning of the 21st century, the term army group is no longer used.

Title

There was no single option for naming army groups , and it all depends on the development of the military affairs of one state or another. In the German Armed Forces, each military district formed, in a special period, an army group , and it was assigned a letter of the district's Latin alphabet, for example, military district "A" - army group "A" . Some countries in the name of the army group displayed their geographical location (location):

  • Army Group Africa ;
  • Army Group Courland ;
  • and so on.

During World War I , army groups were often named after their commander ( army group of the crown prince ). Sometimes army groups were called with only one letter: Army Group “B” , Army Group “F” . In the armed forces of the United States , Britain , France and China during the Second World War , the numerical designations of army groups were used (3rd Army Group, 6th Army Group, etc.) [1] .
