A pre-production version of the universal tracked platform Ajax (Scout SV), the combat weight is 38 tons with a potential for increasing it to 42 tons.
"Agex" in the version of the BRM with a double tower, the main armament of the 40-mm CT40 gun. Increased attention to camouflage the machine.

BMP created jointly by the Austrian company " Steyr-Daimler-Puch " ( Steyr-Daimler-Puch Spezialfahrzeug AG ) and the Spanish "Santa Barbara" ( Santa Bárbara Sistemas ). The development of the machine began in 1988. Two prototypes of the machine were handed over for testing in 1990 [1] . Since 2003, both firms have been owned by Vienna-based General Dynamics European Land Combat Systems, a European-based subsidiary of General Dynamics .

Austrian designation of the machine KSPz-90. Deliveries BMP "Ulan" for the ground forces of Austria were made in the period 2001-2005, a total of 112 delivered BMP. In 1996, Spain ordered 144 infantry fighting vehicles, giving it its own name "Pizarro" (Vehículo de Combate de Infantería "Pizarro"). In 2004, the Spanish Ministry of Defense issued a contract to manufacture an additional batch of 212 Pizarro infantry fighting vehicles.

Content

General layout

The layout of the BMP is classic - the engine and transmission are in front of the armored hull, on the right; driver's seat in front, left. The troop compartment is located in the rear of the machine. The crew of the BMP includes: the commander of the car, the driver and gunner. The landing and landing of the paratroopers is carried out through the aft door and the hatch in the roof of the compartment. The door opens with a hydraulic actuator to the starboard side. On the roof of the compartment there is a turret for the landing commander, equipped around the perimeter with observation instruments and having its own hatch. In the aft door there is a viewing block and a ball embrasure under it for firing from personal weapons.

The BMP is equipped with a SP-30 twin turret armed with a 30 mm Mauser MK 30-2 automatic cannon stabilized in two planes. The height of the line of fire is 2.090 m. The tower is shifted relative to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle towards the starboard side; on the left side of the roof of the hull are the hatches of the driver and the troop compartment, the covers of which swing back and left. In the tower, the position of the BMP commander is on the left, the position of the gunner is on the right. The tower drive is electromechanical.

Booking

The armored hull and turret are welded, assembled from steel armored plates. Reservation of the upper sides of the hull, the sides of the tower, and the frontal projection of the tower is carried out according to an exploded diagram. The Austrian version of the BMP is characterized by a larger mass of 4 tons, associated with higher requirements for armored vehicles. In the basic version of the reservation, with a vehicle combat weight of 25.2 tons, 60 degrees are provided in the front sector of the shelling. protection from a 30-mm APDS APG- type armor-piercing projectile (BPS) and from an armor-piercing incendiary bullet of a 14.5-mm KPV machine gun at a distance of 500 m [1] [2] . If necessary, an additional (hinged) MEXAS armored protection of the German company IBD can be installed on the hull and turret, providing protection in the front sector of the shelling of 60 degrees. from 30 mm feathered subcaliber shells [2] .

For the Pizarro infantry fighting vehicle, a dynamic protection kit SABBLIR (SAnta Barbara BLIndaje Reactivo) was developed, which, however, has found limited use. According to 2002 data, the combat weight of the Pizarro infantry fighting vehicle with a set of mounted armor is 26.3 tons [3] . When installing hinged protection, the modules on the frontal surface of the tower have a characteristic wedge-shaped shape.

According to the Austrian manufacturer, as of 2010, with a combat weight of BMP Ulan 31 tons, the frontal projection is protected from 30 mm BOPTS shells at D 500 m, that is, NATO standardized requirement: Level 6 STANAG 4569 , also protecting the vehicle around from a 14.5 mm armor-piercing incendiary bullet at a distance of D 500 m [4] .

Surveillance devices

The gunner has at his disposal a combined sighting system Kollsman DNRS (Day Night Range Sight) with day and thermal imaging channels, as well as a laser range finder. Images from the Kollsman DNRS sighting system are displayed on the commander’s display.

Armament

The MK 30-2 gun is made under the standard NATO cartridge 30 × 173 mm . The supply of cartridges for the gun is two-sided of two cartridge boxes, which allows using the selector to select cartridges with a BOPS or fragmentation projectile for firing. Shooting modes are as follows: single, bursts of 3-5 or 10 shots. In the cartridge box there are 200 30 mm rounds ready for firing, another 202 rounds are placed in the combat station. The effective range of firing from the MK 30-2 cannon is 2,500 m. The 7.62 mm FN MAG machine gun with an ammunition of 700 rounds ready for firing is paired with the cannon. Digital SLA allows you to control firing from a gun with five different types of 30-mm rounds and from an FN-MAG machine gun [5] .

Ajax

In March 2010, the ASCOD 2 was selected by the British Ministry of Defense as the Ajax / Ajax common tracked platform for the creation of a family of vehicles for its various purposes. These vehicles are a unified replacement for the CVR (T) family , on the basis of which a number of military and service equipment is in service with the British Army: FV107 Scimitar (BRM), FV103 Spartan (armored personnel carrier) and FV106 Samson (BREM) [9] [10] .

Recce Block 2 will include ambulance, reconnaissance and command and staff vehicles.

As part of the Ajax program, it is planned to make the following changes to the basic design of ASCOD 2 [11] :

  • The new Nexter Systems T40M double armored turret, armed with a 40-mm CT40 cannon with 40 × 255 mm telescopic ammunition [12] . Muzzle energy CT40 500 kJ [13] .
  • Basic anti-shell (from small-caliber shells) armor of the armored hull, as well as mine protection with the possibility of additional reinforcement.
  • Upgraded chassis with torsion bar suspension and hydraulic shock absorbers.
  • Improved transmission, MTU V8 199 diesel engine (805 hp) with fully automatic Renk 256B gearbox.

The normal combat weight of the Ajax universal platform is 34 tons.

The Ajax program includes six varieties bearing the names of the characters of ancient Greek mythology:

  • Ajax - Combat reconnaissance vehicle ;
  • Ares - an armored personnel carrier for escorting equipment with special equipment;
  • Athena - command post vehicle ;
  • Argus - engineering reconnaissance vehicle ;
  • Apollo - repair car;
  • Atlas - evacuation vehicle.

Instead of a single BREM, the project involves the use of separate Apollo repair and Atlas recovery vehicles. The first should carry a set of tools for servicing damaged equipment, and the second will receive a crane, pulling and towing systems, as well as other equipment for working with damaged equipment on the battlefield [14] .

Armed

  •   Austria - 112 Ulan, as of 2017 [15] .
  •   United Kingdom - 589 Ajax was ordered in 2014 [16] .
  •   Spain - 150 Pizarro, as of 2017 [17] . In 2003, 212 units were ordered.
