Biography
Born on December 29, 1929 in the village of Novaya Zhuchka (Sadgora) in Romania (now Chernivtsi region ) in the family of a craftsman-carpenter. From the age of five, he studied piano. Until 1940 he graduated from the 5th grade of a local Romanian school.
During the occupation of Bukovina by the Nazi invaders, he was deported to a concentration camp in the village of. Maryanovka, Vinnytsia region. He was in the ghetto in the city of Kopaygorod . He survived thanks to the ability to draw icons for the local population [2] . After the liberation of Ukraine by Soviet troops in 1944, he returned with his family to the Chernivtsi region [3] .
After graduating from school ( 1948 ), he entered the Chernivtsi Medical Institute, after which in 1955 he worked as a surgeon in a hospital in the village of Grozintsy, Khotyn district, Chernivtsi region, for six years.
Since 1952 - a member of the regional union of composers.
In 1955 he graduated with honors from the piano department of the Chernivtsi Music College .
He worked as a teacher and accompanist in the Chernivtsi Palace of Schoolchildren.
Since 1961 - a teacher in the piano class of the Chernivtsi College of Music. He has been teaching piano techniques for over 30 years.
He graduated from the Kiev Tchaikovsky Conservatory ( 1960 - 1965 ). In the 2nd year of the conservatory, he became a teacher at the Chernivtsi Music College .
Since 1998 - a member of the National All-Ukrainian Musical Union.

In 1999 he was awarded the badge "Excellence in Education in Ukraine." In the same year he became a laureate of the UNESCO Gold Medal and the title “Golden Name of World Culture” for a series of 27 historical piano concerts dedicated to piano music. For two years, the maestro performed 443 works of famous composers - from Bach to Scriabin. The award was held in Brussels, in the building of the Royal Opera House, the pianist’s daughter (he couldn’t come) received the medal from the hands of the King of Belgium [4] .
In 2000, the name of Joseph Elgiser was recorded on the “Avenue of Stars” in Chernivtsi .
Since November 1, 2002 - a member of the Union of Composers of Ukraine. In the same year, in Austria, the CD "Music of Bukovina" was released (performed and edited by Elgiser).
Between 2000 and 2003, 7 volumes of the composer's works were published.
Since 2004, the maestro received the title of Honored Artist of Ukraine, became an honorary member of the board of the society named after F. Chopin and society. F. Liszt .
Died on May 26, 2014 .
Creativity
Among the famous musicians Elgiser worked with were Mstislav Rostropovich [5] , D. Gnatyuk , M. Stefyuk , A. Solovyanenko , O. Rat , P. Karmalyuk and others.
Elgisser is known in Ukraine as a composer , musicologist , regular author of newspaper articles and reviews, author of articles for the “Ukrainian Musical Dictionary”
The author of more than 200 piano and orchestral works. The author of 70 songs, romances and works for the choir. Some of the vocal works are written in their own texts.
