The city is known for its fortress, which had important military importance in the XIX century. In particular, one of the battles of the Austro-Italian War took place here in 1848, after the troops of the Austrian Field Marshal Radetzky retreated from the rebellious Milan to the fortresses of Mantua , Verona , Peschiera del Garda and Legnano .
World Heritage
In 2017, the historic center of the city (inside the fortress walls) was included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site Venetian fortifications of the 16th — 17th centuries. Also within the city are two elements of another UNESCO World Heritage Site - “ Prehistoric pile settlements in the Alps ” (established in 2011).
