Content
History
On the territory of the commune, a few kilometers north of the eponymous modern settlement, was the historical Eraclea (Heraclea), the first capital of the Venetian Republic . Named in honor of the Byzantine emperor Heraclius I , who rebuilt the city here as the potential capital of the then rapidly growing Byzantine theme of Dalmatia, after the baptism of the Serbs in 626 and their receiving foederati status. According to legend, in 697, the first doge Paolo Lucio Anafesto was elected at a meeting of the inhabitants of the lagoon . In 742, Theodato Ipato, the 4th Doge, moved his residence from Eraklei to Malamocco to Lido , from where only in 811 she was transferred to Rialto [1] .
The patroness of the commune venerates the Blessed Virgin Mary (Santa Maria Concetta). foederati and were baptized at the request of Heraclius (up to 626).
