United Javakhk

“United Javakhk” ( armenian Միասնական Ջավախք ) is a socio-political movement in Georgia representing the interests of the Armenian population. The head of the organization is Vahagn Chakhalyan . The movement operating in Samtskhe-Javakheti criticizes the Georgian authorities, accusing them of discrimination against Armenians.

First Javakhk appeared in the arena on March 13, 2005, when it organized a rally in Akhalkalaki in protest of the Georgian government’s plans to withdraw from Akhalkalaki a Russian military base, which was the cornerstone of the local economy and was perceived by the local population as a guarantee against possible Turkish aggression. A similar rally was also held on March 31, both events attracted several thousand Protestants [1] .

On July 20, 2008, Georgian police broke into the house of the head of Vahagn Chakhalyan, arresting himself, his father and brother. As REGNUM reported, according to neighbors, the bursting special forces openly brought ammunition with them to accuse Chakhalyan of their owner. Searches were carried out in the office of the organization, where, according to police, ammunition was also found. Chakhalyan was charged under five articles of the criminal code. On December 3, Chakhalyan was charged again with the trial being postponed indefinitely. [2] .
