Biography
Born and educated in the city of Newcastle-upon-Tyne ( Newcastle-on-Tyne ) in England , in 1832.
From a young age he began to be interested in natural science through the society Tyneside Naturalists Field Club . In 1852, he went to Australia , where he worked for 8 years as a gold miner, but in 1860, due to a severe injury, he was forced to return to England.
In 1861, Belt published his work, Mineral Veins: an Inquiry into Their Auriferous Quartz Veins of Australia . 4 years he worked in Nicaragua , then published a new and most famous work " The Naturalist in Nicaragua " (1874), in which he described many aspects of the life of tropical ants . Belt was the first to notice that leaf cutter ants do not eat the leaves of trees that they cut, but turn them into a chewed mass, on which they grow mushrooms that serve them as food.
Also known for its glacial studies, including in England. Among the places of his further expeditions: Russia , Siberia and the state of Colorado .
He died in Denver (Colorado) on September 21, 1878 and was buried in the Riverside Cemetery cemetery [1] .
