Biography
Born in a family of Belarusian immigrants from Vilna [1] [2] .
From early childhood she was swimming. There was no female team at the local school, so she trained with the boys, which benefited her - in high school she was two heads ahead of her age.
In 1928, Albina became the freestyle sprint champion of the USA, simultaneously setting three national records. At the Olympic Games of 1928 in Amsterdam to the Olympic records, she emerged as the winner of the prestigious distance in women's swimming - 100 meters freestyle.
The second gold Albina won 4 × 100 meters freestyle as part of the relay.
Albina, 17, was greeted by thousands of fans in her native Worcester. Grateful society has collected the necessary 4 thousand dollars for her studies at Pembroke College at Brown University . The girl decided to devote all the time to study and quit with a great sport. At university, she met her future husband, Harrison van Aiken , who became a successful businessman, vice-president of General Electric Corporation .
In 1964, Albin van Aiken died at the age of 53 after fighting a serious illness.
