In 1901 (according to other sources in 1903 ), a prominent Austrian dentist of Czech origin, one of the pioneers of world periodontology [1] Arthur Grushka ( him. Arthur Hruska , in the Italian pronunciation of Arturo Hruska ; 1880 - 1971 [2] ) acquired Gardone house with a plot of land and immediately noted the special climate of the area. Starting in 1910 , he planted a botanical garden on his plot of just over 1.5 hectares, in which more than 500 plant species from all continents and growing in different climates were represented.
In 1988 , the garden was acquired by Austrian artist Andre Heller and is currently owned by his foundation ( Italian: Fondazione André Heller ). Thanks to Heller, a number of famous contemporary artists and sculptors, including Roy Lichtenstein and Keith Haring, are located in the garden.
Magnolias, Tibetan primroses, reeds of all sizes, irises and ferns, including royal osmund, grow in the Heller garden. Many varieties of succulents and subtropical plants grow here. Many aquatic plants float in small ponds with fountains and waterfalls typical of the Japanese landscape. There is also a dense forest of bamboo. Alpine flowers grow among stones, in crevices and small ravines.
The garden is open to the public from March to October, from 9:00 to 19:00.
