World Cup 2002 (qualifying tournament, CAF)

This article details the qualifiers for the 2002 World Cup in the African Continental Zone ( CAF ) . An overview of the qualifying tournament is presented in the article World Cup 2002 (qualifying tournament) .

51 out of 53 CAF countries applied for participation in the 2002 World Cup . Niger Niger and Comoros The comors did not participate, Burundi Burundi has starred before the draw. The African continental zone received 5 (out of 32) permits for the final tournament.

The qualifying tournament was played in two stages:

  • First stage : 50 countries were divided into 5 pools of 5 pairs. Teams in each pair in two matches (at home and away) determined the participants in the final stage.
  • Final stage : 25 countries were divided into 5 groups of 5 teams each. Teams played each with each two matches (at home and away). Winners of groups received permits.
