Life and career
Tim was born on June 2, 1976. Parents Margaret and Charles Patrick Rice-Oxley. He attended Tonbridge School, Kent , with his best friends Richard Hughes and Tom Chaplin . Mothers Tim and Tom met in the hospital in March 1979. Brother Rice-Oxley (also Tom) was born shortly after Chaplin.
Tim took piano lessons when he was a teenager. He later admitted that he hated these activities because he considered classical music boring. After the parents stopped these lessons, he learned to play well himself and developed his own style, mainly thanks to The Beatles . [1] Rice-Oxley later gave lessons to Chaplin after school. In 1994, he entered University College London , where Hughes studied geography, in the humanities. Friend and guitarist Dominic Scott suggested Tim create a band and he agreed. The two of them asked Hughes to play drums. Around the same time, Rice-Oxley met Chris Martin , who was simultaneously recording a demo with Coldplay. He, having listened to Tim’s playing the piano during the weekend at Virginia Falls in Surrey , invited him to his group, but Rice-Oxley refused to focus on Keane with his friends. In a 2004 interview, he admitted that he envied the success of Martin and Coldplay .
In 1997, Rice-Oxley convinced Scott and Hughes that Chaplin should join them. It was this year that the group adopted the name "Keane".
During their stay in London (in 1998), Rice-Oxley lived in a shared apartment with Tom at Stoke Newington and they tried to make money with their performances.
When Dominic played the lead guitar, Tim assumed the role of bass player, but this role was not the most important. They wrote songs for the band with Scott. At Strangers Keane, they described Scott's style as " bluesy " and said they didn't like playing songs in that style. Soon they began playing Rice-Oxley songs instead of Scott's songs.
When Scott left the band in July 2001, Rice-Oxley began playing the piano, which has now become the “driving force” of all Keane songs. He continues to play the bass; however, now his parts are recorded separately in advance and are played on his Apple Powerbook during concerts.
In 2004, he won the Ivor Novello Awards in the category "Best Composer of the Year".
In 2006, he wrote the songs “Early Winter” and “The Girl Inside” (not published) for Gwen Stefani’s second solo album, The Sweet Escape .
He currently also plays the role of Keane backing vocalist at concerts and recordings in the studio, with the exception of studio recordings of the songs “ Sunshine ” and “Your Love”, where he acts as the main vocalist.
In February 2005 he married, the ceremony was not loud. Tim's best man was Tom Chaplin. In 2007, Rice-Oxley had a daughter.
