While living in Munich , he first wrote scenes of the Napoleonic Wars ("Lyutsovskie Rangers", "Retreat of Napoleon's Army from Russia", etc.) or Hungarian herd horses, and then episodes of the French-German war of 1870-1871 . (“Germans receiving horses of the French cavalry after the Battle of Sedan”, two scenes of the battle of Champigny, etc.). These works testify to the artist’s close acquaintance with the spirit of a soldier and military affairs; in addition, he was able to dramatize the depicted incident and group the figures picturesquely, without prejudice to their naturalness.
Less successful are his paintings of non-tatal content, such as, for example, The Death of Ophelia, Friedrich Pfalzsky's Departure from Prague after the Battle of White Mountain, Joseph's Sale by Brothers to Egypt, and scenes of Moroccan life painted after the artist’s trip to the northern coast of Africa.
