Biography

In 1928 he graduated from Kutulik school of the second stage. He worked as a teacher at Dologonsky Primary School in Kabansky Aimak of Buryatia. In 1931, he was transferred to work in the city of Ulan-Ude as executive secretary, then as head of the cult department and deputy chairman of the Presidium of the Buryat regional Council of the trade union of public education workers. In the evenings, he studies at the Workers' Faculty of the Irkutsk University, a branch of which was opened in Ulan-Ude. In September 1934 he entered the geological-soil-geographical faculty of the Irkutsk State University. In 1939, after graduating from university, he remained to work at the department of physical geography as an assistant.

In the late 1930s , the early 1940s, Melkheev, on the instructions of the regional branch of the Writers' Union, worked with the Buryat folk poet and narrator A. A. Toroev, recording songs and uligära poems from his words. Participates in the hydrographic expedition of the University, makes a map of the hydrography of the south of Eastern Siberia. He worked as a senior teacher at the Department of Geography of the Irkutsk Pedagogical Institute.

From March 1942 to January 1944 he served in the Soviet Army in Transbaikalia . He was demobilized and sent to the disposal of the Irkutsk Regional Department of Public Education. He worked as deputy director and teacher of geography at the Tulun pedagogical school, later - as a senior teacher, associate professor and head of the department of natural science and geography at the Tulun Teaching Institute.

In 1951, at the Faculty of Geography of Moscow University, Melkheev defended his thesis on the topic “The Iya River Basin and the Prospects for its Water Management”. In 1954, he was elected assistant professor of the Department of Physical Geography of the Irkutsk University. Since 1971 - Doctor of Geographical Sciences, Professor.

One of his most famous and sought-after books was “The Geographical Names of Eastern Siberia: Irkutsk and Chita Regions” (1969). In Buryatia, in the same period, the book Toponymy of Buryatia (1969) was published. Still later, the book "Geographical names of Yenisei Siberia" (1986) was published.

The books of Melkheev, the very origin of the Buryat , tells about the geographical names of Buryatia , Yenisei Siberia, some areas of the Irkutsk and Chita regions , about their history, origin and semantic meaning. Books are based on cartographic , archival and literary (historical, geographical, ethnographic) sources.
