History
The city was formed near the Church of St. Agatha, which became a place of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages. It was believed that in the IX century, Saint Agatha appeared here to a girl who fled from the Norman from Kennemerland .
In 1276, Floris V (Earl of Holland) granted Beverwijk the right to maintain the market, and in 1298 Jan I (Earl of Holland) granted city rights.
Before the Hey River was drained, it was precisely in these places that the narrowest place of the North Holland Peninsula was located, therefore, after the 1799, a defensive line was built here in 1800.
Sport
Beverwijk is home to the De Kennemers Football Club.
