Hecto-

Hecto (Russian designation: g ; international: h ; from the other Greek ἑκατόν "one hundred") is one of the prefixes used in the International System of Units (SI) to form names and symbols of decimal multiple units [1] [2] . The unit, the name of which is formed by attaching the prefix hectare to the name of the initial unit, is obtained by multiplying the initial unit by the number 10 2 , i.e. by one hundred .

Officially adopted in 1795 with the introduction of the metric system of measures. The proposal to adopt the prefix was put forward by Van Swinden [3] .

As the prefix SI was adopted by the XI General Conference on Weights and Measures in 1960 simultaneously with the adoption of the SI system as a whole [4] [5] .

Main applications:

  • 1 hectare = 100 ar - used in agriculture ;
  • hectopascal - widely used in meteorology , where hectare pascals (hPa) measure air pressure ;
  • hectoliter - used in agriculture to measure the volume of wine and milk;
  • hectometer - to denote the range of wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation ( hectometer waves ). Also in hectometers, distances in anti-aircraft artillery are measured.
