Born in a military family. He graduated from the Academy of Saint-Cyr, in 1911 he was promoted to lieutenant. He participated in the First World War , was awarded the Legion of Honor.
Member of many battles of World War II . In 1939 he was promoted to colonel, after the defeat of France, he left for North Africa, where he entered the army of de Gaulle. He fought in Tunisia and in Italy. In 1944 he participated in the liberation of Provence , then fought in Alsace and in Germany. In July 1945 he was appointed commander of the French occupation forces in Germany. In 1946, he resigned as army general.
In 1951-1955 he was a deputy of the National Assembly .
