Sokolov, Andrei Yurievich (Soviet chess player)

Andrei Yurievich Sokolov ( March 20, 1963 , Vorkuta ) - French , formerly Soviet , chess player , grandmaster ( 1984 ). Biography

Born in the family of a Soviet officer, later director of the All-Russian Chess Club, Yuri Pavlinovich Sokolov. Brother Sergey also played chess at a sporting level.

First announced itself in 1981, when he became the champion of Moscow. At the European Youth Championship (1981/82) he took third place. He studied under the leadership of Vladimir Yurkov .

In 1984 he became the champion of the USSR. The following year (1985) shared 4-6th place.

In 1985, he shared the 1-3rd place with A. Yusupov and R. Vaganyan at the Candidates Tournament (Montpellier, 1985). In 1986, he won the matches of the candidates, sensationally defeating R. Vaganyan in the 1/2 finals - 6: 2 (Minsk), and in the final - A. Yusupova - 7.5: 6.5 (Riga), having won three games at the finish in a row and agreeing to a draw in the winning position in the last game, and won the right to play in the super final match of the applicants with A. Karpov, whose winner became the opponent of G. Kasparov in the 1987 world championship match. The match with A. Karpov was held in Linares in 1987 d. and ended in the defeat of Sokolov 3.5: 7.5 (-4 = 7).

In the next cycle, A. Sokolov participated in the contenders ’matches and lost in the 1/8 finals to C. Spraggett 5.5: 6.5 (St. John, 1988). Participant in interzonal tournaments: Biel, 1985 (3rd place), Manila, 1990 (29th-39th place).

Member of the symbolic club of world champions winners Mikhail Chigorin since October 1988.

The USSR national team winner of the World Chess Olympiads (1984, 1986), the first team world championship (1985). Since 2000, lives and stands for France.
