A brief scale for assessing mental status ( English Mini-mental State Examination, MMSE ) is a short questionnaire of 30 items used to identify ( screening ) possible cognitive impairments, in particular, dementia . MMSE is also used to assess changes in the development of the disease, or under the influence of therapy.
The scale was developed in 1975. [1] in subsequent years, changes were made to it. It usually takes about 10 minutes to pass the test, during which a brief assessment of a person’s arithmetic abilities, his memory and orientation in space and time takes place. Evaluation results are not specific to individual diseases. To establish a diagnosis in patients with altered assessments, more detailed neuropsychological testing is required, and in some cases, observation over time, assessment of the response to treatment. There are similar assessment tools for examining patients on repeated visits - Mini-cog scale, MoCA test (Montreal cognitive questionnaire).
