History

Although hot springs have been used by people since ancient times, Sciacca was founded by Selinunte only as a military fortification during his ongoing wars with the city of Agrigento , and the Romans called it “Thermae Selinuntinae”. During Arab rule, the city developed rapidly (the name “Shakka” comes from the Arabic “as-sakah” - bathing). The Normans continued to fortify the city as they quickly appreciated its strategic importance for controlling trade routes. In the following years, many wars happened, and the city was strengthened again and again - especially against the attacks of Karl Valois .

The patroness of the commune is the Blessed Virgin Mary (Maria SS. Del Soccorso). The holiday is annually celebrated on February 2 and August 15 .

Sciacca is also famous for its ceramics, which in ancient times was mentioned by Diodorus of Sicily . Local production of such products flourished during the period of Arab rule, and the second golden age came already in the XVI century.
