Footballer of the Year according to the Association of Football Journalists

Rahim Sterling - current award winner

The Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year football player of the year is an annual award given to the best football player of the season in English football [1] . For the first time, the award was presented following the results of the 1947/48 season , in which it was awarded to Blackpool winger Stanley Matthews . The current winner of the award is Manchester City player Rahim Sterling [2] . Eight players have won this prize more than once, the last time that player was Cristiano Ronaldo , who received this award in the 2007/08 season .

The winner is determined by voting among members of the Association of Football Journalists (FWA), which includes about 400 football journalists in England [3] . The author of the idea of the annual award for the best soccer player is Charles Baken , in the past - a professional soccer player, later a journalist and one of the founders of the Association of Football Journalists [4] .

Winners

The award has already been awarded 71 times, it received 62 players. Only in one season were two football players awarded at the same time [5] . The table also shows other awards that the player received at the end of the season in England, namely the awards of the Professional Football Association - Player of the Year according to football players (PPY) [6] [7] [8] , Player of the Year according to fans (FPY) [ 9] and Young Player of the Year (YPY) [7] [8] [10] .
