“Children of the Capitan” is a Soviet full-length black-and-white feature film , staged at the Mosfilm studio in 1936 by director Vladimir Weinstock based on the eponymous novel by Jules Verne .

The film premiered in the USSR on September 15, 1936. For the film was written " Song of the Captain ", which was performed by Nikolai Cherkasov himself. Initially, the role of Robert Grant had to perform another actor. During the field shooting in Nalchik, it turned out that the child who played the role of Robert Grant was afraid of horses. After this, the last screen test by Yakov Segel was called up for the lead role [1] . According to the memoirs of Jacob Segele , Alexander Ptushko , who had previously served in the First Cavalry Army [1] taught him to ride a horse in just one night. Famous theatrical actor, Honored Artist of the Imperial Theaters and in the future People's Artist of the USSR and laureate of the Stalin Prize Yury Yuryev , who was one of the few appearances on the movie screen, starred in the cameo role of captain Grant. After 45 years, the anniversary of the film was celebrated in the Udarnik cinema in the capital. It was attended by three of the surviving members of the film crew: assistant director Leonid Knyazhinsky, co-star Jacob Segel and assistant make-up artist N. Maslennikova [1] . In 1986 a new film version was released - “ In Search of Captain Grant ”, where Isaac Dunaevsky ’s popular melody from the film was used.
Content
Story
The crew of the yacht "Duncan" Lord Glenarvan in the waters of Scotland caught a shark . When cutting the carcass inside the fish there was a bottle in which a request for help from the shipwrecked was written in three languages. The water badly damaged the documents, but managed to make out that the ship of captain Grant was wrecked at the 37th degree of southern latitude . The longitude of the crash site could not be determined.
Glenarvan goes to London to organize a rescue expedition, but there he is denied, citing the vagueness and inferiority of information. An indirect reason for refusal is that Captain Grant is a Scottish patriot who dreams of Scotland independence. In addition, the main purpose of his voyages - to establish New Scotland.
During the absence of the lord, the children of Captain Grant, a son and a daughter, came to the yacht in the hope of finding out something about their father. When Glenarvan returned home, his wife persuaded him to go in search of the captain on the Duncan.
Travelers, moving by sea and land, cross the 37th parallel to Patagonia , visit the islands of Tristan da Cunha and Amsterdam , pass south-east Australia and New Zealand . Having experienced many dangerous adventures, they find Captain Grant on the small island of Tabor , also lying at 37 ° south latitude.

Since the beginning of the 1990s, the film was released by the cinema association “Close-up” on videotapes. Also, the film was released on videotape by distributors Format A and Master Teip (in the 2000s).
In the 2000s, the film was restored and released on DVD by the Master Tape distributor, on February 10, 2005, by the Soyuz Video studio, also by the Krupny Plan association, Retro-Club, Vostok V, Videobase (2007), “Magnat” and others.
Movie ratings
Film critic Nina Sputnitskaya described the process of creating the film and assessed it as follows: “The film Children of Captain Grant did not become a turning point in the history of cinema, but gives an idea of the origins of the cinema of Ptushko’s cinema. Major musical component, Jacques Paganel performed by Nikolai Cherkasov, combined shots and stunts inscribed a controversial film adaptation in the history of Russian culture, provided the film with the love of several generations of viewers [2] .
