Story
The Altai village of Srostki , the birthplace of Shukshin, wakes up early. He knows very well what is happening on his streets and in his courtyards. Which of the villagers will run to hang out, whom, having walked, the wife with logs will wait for the rafts to float along the river. This plastic introduction, this genre refrain to the film - landscape and everyday sketches - cameraman Valery Ginzburg will remove in the vein of poetic documentary.
The role of one of the brothers, Stepan Voevodin, was played by Leonid Kuravlev . He plays a dramatic version of the fate of Pashka Kolokolnikov . The element of a natural feeling not burdened with self-reflection was formerly regarded as a lyrical-comic, and now - as a dramatic, dangerous one. The plot of the first novel of the film is Stepan’s escape from custody two months before the end of the term and several hours spent in his home. A lively, colorful, irresistible crowd gathered at the table at the Voevodins on the occasion of the "release" of his son: conversations, songs, laughter. They did not immediately notice the policeman who came to arrest the fugitive.
Old Yermolay Voevodin had three more sons. The eldest went to Moscow a long time ago, became a circus fighter, easily took shallow roots into the stratum of urban culture and feels great in it, not noticing the comic nature of his position, which Shukshin and actor Alexei Vanin emphasize in every possible way. The youngest went after the eldest to the city, to the construction site, at the limit, but did not take root, toil.
Only one son stayed home in the village, carpentry. Good hero, silent, meek, hardworking. His image is resolved with restraint, without excessive psychologism. But nature plays along with him, part of which he acts as a natural person, and the warm atmosphere of the house, from which simple and strong roots of his nature grow. Nearby is another member of the family - a deaf-mute daughter. Only plastic and expression of eyes, and the light of a smile - and the actress of the Theater of facial expressions and gesture Marta Grakhova, using seemingly mean means, creates the image of a completely happy person. She feels good among her own people, in her family, in her village. But if something happens, it will fly out of its native nest - so after all, strangers can trample on someone else's side. So father thinks anxiously, worried about his Faith. Vsevolod Sanaev restrained, with great dignity conveys the inner drama of the image. And we see how, in essence, the Vojvodina family collapses. And the father feels this, but does not understand, that the city is not to blame for the fact that the old village just ends [1] .
