Biography

Josef Lanner was born in the Saint-Ulrich district of Vienna. Having learned to play the violin on his own, Lanner began playing in the small string orchestra of Michel Pamer, and in the early 1820s. headed his own string quartet, the success of which allowed him by 1824 to stand at the head of a small orchestra. This orchestra, performing dance music at the Vienna carnivals and city festivals, quickly gained considerable popularity, so Lanner found it possible to invite Johann Strauss as his assistant to work with a different orchestral composition. It was a quintet in which he played the violin , and Johann Strauss on the viola . Later, the paths of the two musicians diverged, and Strauss achieved much greater fame - partly due to the fact that he actively performed in different countries, while Lanner preferred to perform exclusively in Vienna. Some time later, Josef Lanner also took over the management of the Vienna Regimental Orchestra. He died in 1843 , at the age of 42 from typhus . Initially, his body was buried at Oberdöbling ( German Oberdöbling ), after which it was exhumed and reburied at the Vienna Central Cemetery , in a mass grave near Johann Strauss I and Johann Strauss II .

Lanner is best known as the author of waltzes , slow waltzes , gallops , potpourri and marches . The most popular waltzes by Josef Lanner are Der Pesther Walze, Die Werber, Die Hofballtänze and Die Schönbrunner.

Lanner is known as the founder of the classical Viennese waltz , which has become an independent dance genre . It was in his works that the structures characteristic of him were first discovered. Also Joseph Lanner along with Johann Strauss was the conductor of the famous Viennese dance orchestras of his time.

In 1828, Josef Lanner married Francis Jans , with whom he had three children. His son, Augustus Lanner - composer , daughter, Katharina Lanner - dancer . His second daughter, Franciska Carolina Lanner (1836-1853), died early. The marriage with Francis Jans was terminated by a court decision on September 21, 1842 . From 1838, Josef Lanner lived with the butcher’s daughter, Maria Kraus . On October 6, 1843, after his death from typhus , his son, Karl Maria Kraus, was born.
