He studied at the University of Michigan , then at the University of Chicago . After that, he worked at the University of California at Los Angeles , then at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology .
The main works in the field of algebraic topology , especially at the junction with functional analysis , where Singer made his main contribution to mathematics, together with Atiye, proved a theorem on the index of an elliptic operator , which solved the problem posed by I. M. Gelfand in the early 1950s .
Laureate of the Abel Prize ( 2004 , together with M. Atiye) and the Steel Prize ( 2000 ). He is also a member of the US National Academy of Sciences , the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a full member of the American Mathematical Society . [five]
