In the year that has passed since the previous Italian Grand Prix, the Monza track has undergone reconstruction: two βeskiβ have been added to slow down the movement of cars. The Lotus team performed in Italy with just one car and under the amended name World Wide Racing to avoid possible complications with the Italian authorities, who continued to investigate the death of the pilot of the Lotus Jochen Rindt two years earlier. Scuderia Ferrari put up three cars again, returning Mario Andretti to the team, and John Curtis decided to race as a pilot of his own car. The Tecno team also expanded its presence to two cars: Derek Bell and Nanni Galli, successive during the season, performed at the same time this time.
Qualification was won by Jacques X , ahead of Chris Aamon , who became the second. Jackie Stewart turned out to be a failure to start the race: the transmission failed in his car. Jacques X took the lead, Clay Regazzoni came in second, and Amon rolled back to fifth, but after a while he managed to reach fourth. On the 14th lap after X's mistake, Regazzoni came forward, but after two laps the Swiss crashed into the circular Karlus Pase who turned in front of him and left the race. In turn, the leader after the departure of the Swiss X on lap 46 came down due to an engine failure, paving the way for victory to Emerson Fittipaldi , who secured the championship title with this result. Finishing second Mike Halewood for the first time in his career climbed the podium, which also became the first in the history of the Surtees team.
