Etymology

The species does not have an established Russian name, in the Russian-language sources the scientific name Paphiopedilum sanderianum is usually used.

Named after the famous English orchid collector Frederick Sander . At the end of the 19th century, the “Sander House” was considered not only the main attraction of the English city of St. Albans, but also the world capital of orchid farming, in which its own railway was laid [2] .

The English name is Sander's Paphiopedilum.

Description History

It was discovered in 1885 , but remained a rarity, and by the beginning of the XX century it practically disappeared from the collections. Re-found in 1982 .

Biological Description

Escape the sympodial type.
Leaves 4-5, up to 45 cm long, 4-6 cm wide, glossy green.
Peduncle is almost horizontal, single, red-brown, bears from 2 to 5 flowers.
Flowers are 7 cm in diameter, side lobes are up to a meter long or more (although in many plants they reach only half this length [3] ), ribbon-like, swirling, pale yellow with purple stripes and spots.
The upper sepal (sail) is narrow, on a yellow background there are many relatively wide and closely spaced longitudinal stripes. The central strip has a characteristic gap near the base, which is inherited in its hybrids.
The lip is brownish yellow.

Range, environmental features

Endemic of Kalimantan (Gunung Mulu National Park).
From 150 to 900 meters above sea level.
Lithophyte . Shaded habitats on vertical limestone rocks.
Substrate: moss- covered rocks with leaf litter and humus accumulated in niches, pH 7.3–7.5 [4] .

The average temperature in the places of growth is 28/21 ° C (day / night) throughout the year [5] .

It blooms in April and June.

It belongs to the number of protected species (I CITES appendix).

In Culture

Paphiopedilum sanderianum John Day 1886

Refers to slowly growing species. Under optimal conditions, plants bloom at the age of four years.

Because of problems with breeding, high price and slow growth, it has become available to collectors only in recent years [6] .

The temperature group is warm. Daytime temperature: 24–32 ° C, nighttime 18–24 ° C [7] . For normal flowering, a temperature difference of 5-8 ° C is required day / night.
Light - bright diffused, 18000-25000 lux [5] , with a daylight duration of 12 hours.
Relative humidity 50–80%.
Planting in plastic and ceramic pots with several drainage holes on the bottom, providing uniform drying of the substrate.
There is no rest period.
The main components of the substrate: see article Paphiopedilum . There is an opinion that Paphiopedilum sanderianum is a calcephilum ; therefore, lime-containing minerals or calcination with dolomite flour are desirable in the soil [8] .
The frequency of watering is selected so that the substrate inside the pot does not have time to dry completely.
The species is actively used in hybridization , but successful hybrids are rare, and are obtained only with plants from a closely related long leaf group due to the recessiveness of the gene responsible for the length of the side lobes and the lack of attractiveness in the rest of the flower.
Most hybrids involving Paph. sanderianum has not as long lateral petals as Paph. sanderianum [3] .
