European Communities (sometimes also called the European Community or the EU [1] ) is a combination of three formally independent international organizations with common governing bodies [2] .
These organizations were:
- European Economic Community (from 1993 to 2009 - the European Community ),
- European Atomic Energy Community (EURATOM) and
- European Coal and Steel Association (until the expiration of its memorandum of association in 2002).
The norms of the European Communities formed the basis of the Treaty establishing the European Economic Community .
