History
In the 13th – 20th centuries, on the territory of the Flevoland province, there was a part of the Zuiderze Bay of the North Sea, which went deep into the Netherlands and occupied an area of 5000 km² [4] . In 1916, a major flood occurred, after which a decision was made to drain part of the bay. In 1927-1933, the Afslejtdeyk dam was built, separating the North Sea from the gulf and subsequently the shallow freshwater lake IJsselmeer was created [5] . After the construction of the second dam, called Houtribdijk , it was divided into two parts, which today are called Markermer and IJsselmeer lakes. In 1975, part of the IJsselmeer lake was drained and on January 1, 1986, the province of Flevoland was formed on the site of its southern and eastern parts.
