In the process of lowering the water level in the Caspian Sea in the middle of the 20th century, a large part of the bay turned into an extensive litter (salt marsh) , the area decreased from 15 thousand km² to 500 km², the depth did not exceed 1 m.
Currently, the water level in the Caspian Sea is rising, so the Dead Kultuk is increasing, and the once-drying Kaydak Bay is again filled with water.
In the northern part of the litter is the eponymous oil field .
