Khomeini Returns to Iran

Ayatollah Khomeini’s return to Iran is one of the key events of the 1979 Islamic Revolution . On the morning of February 1 (12 Bahman 1357 on the Iranian calendar ), Khomeini returned to Tehran on a chartered Boeing-747 Air France after 15 years of exile in Turkey , Iraq and France . In the Iranian capital, he was met by more than 3 million people.

Circumstances

For the first time, information about the imminent arrival of Khomeini appeared in Iranian newspapers on January 24 , but on the orders of the Prime Minister of the interim government, Shapur Bakhtiyar, all airports in the country were immediately closed. In turn, Khomeini called on the Tehran to protest against this decision. On January 28, Bakhtiyar ordered the opening of the Tehran airport of Mehrabad .

On February 1, 1979, close associate of Khomeini Abolhasan Banisadr ordered a charter flight from Air France , on which the inspiration of the Islamic Revolution flew together from Paris to Tehran . The plane with Khomeini on board landed in Mehrabad at 9 hours 27 minutes 30 seconds local time. In Tehran he was met by millions of enthusiastic Iranians. Cavalcade Khomeini headed to the Beheshte Zahra memorial cemetery south of Tehran. There, the imam delivered a twenty-minute speech in which he rejected Bakhtiyar ’s proposal on the possibility of creating a new government and threatened him with arrest if he didn’t get out of the country. In particular, he stated:

He himself, his government, his parliament, his senate are illegal. And if this continues, they should all be brought to justice. We will judge them. I will appoint a government. I will give the teeth to the current government. [one]
