East Side Gallery is a permanent open-air art gallery in the German capital , in the Friedrichshain district of Berlin .
The gallery is the largest and most famous of the surviving sections of the border structures of the Berlin Wall . In the spring of 1990 , after the opening of the border between West and East Berlin in 1989, an artistic reflection of the political events that took place in Germany in 1989-1990 appeared on the stretch of the Berlin Wall along the Spree on Mühlenstrasse ( German Mühlenstraße ) from Ostbahnhof to Oberbaumbrücke . 118 artists from 21 countries took part in the work on 106 paintings painted on the east side of the Berlin Wall. The gallery opened on September 28, 1990 . Its length is 1316 meters, and thus the East Side Gallery is the world's longest open-air art gallery with a permanent exhibition. Since 1991, the gallery has been under state protection as a historical monument.
