He graduated from the Eastman School of Music ( 1943 ), then in 1952 - 1953 he studied in Paris with Nadi Boulanger . In 1944 - 1958 he taught at the University of North Carolina Women's College, in 1960-1984 at the University of British Columbia .
In 1966 - 1969, he made several trips to Japan to study the art of playing the shakuhachi flute and later also performed concerts on this instrument, including a duet with the performer for whom Kiyo Kobayashi. The influence of Japanese musical culture is also present in Weissgarber's own compositions - including in “Kyoto landscapes” for orchestra, the vocal cycle “Ten Japanese Folk Songs”, etc. In total, Weissgarber owns about 450 compositions, as well as a number of articles; he also worked on the biography of Aurelio Journey , which remained unpublished.
