History

The history of education at the University of Strasbourg dates back to the Protestant gymnasium, founded in 1538 by Johann Sturm, after which the university was called the Protestant Academy.

In 1566, Emperor Maximilian II gave the gymnasium the status of an academy , in 1621 it became a university, and in 1631 - a royal university.

In 1681, troops of King Louis XIV seized Alsace and, under the Treaty of Westphalia, seized the west bank of the Rhine , including the university, and withdrew to France.

During World War II , when France was occupied by Nazi Germany, the university was moved to Clermont-Ferrand .

In 1970, the University of Strasbourg was divided into three separate universities:

  • University of Strasbourg I (Louis Pasteur University);
  • University of Strasbourg II (Mark Blok University);
  • University of Strasbourg III (University of Robert Schumann).

In 2009, they were again merged into one university.
