.name

.name is a common top-level domain for personal sites. The domain was allocated in 2001, and was launched into normal operation in January 2002 . Both second-level domains (john.name - such registrations are allowed from January 2004 ) and third-level domains (john.doe.name) can be registered. If the domain is registered at the third level, then the corresponding second-level domain (doe.name in the above example) is already taken and cannot be registered separately.

History

Initially, top-level domain management was entrusted to the Global Name Registry in 2001. They became fully operational in January 2002. Verisign began operations in February 2009.

Domains can be registered at the second (john.name) and third (john.doe.name) levels. You can also register an email address in the format john@doe.name. Such an email address may require forwarding, that is, using a different recipient address, or it can be used as a regular email address (for example, john@doe.com), depending on the registrar.

If the domain is registered at the third level (john.doe.name), the second level (in this example, doe.name) is common and cannot be registered by an individual. This does not affect other second-level domains, such as johndoe.name.

When a TLD top-level domain appeared, only third-level registration (and email forwarding) was allowed. In January 2004, registration of the second level became possible. In the original, the structure of domain names was conceived as first name. Last name. Name, so that individuals could receive a domain corresponding to their first name.

In November 2009, international domains (IDNs) became available for the second and third level domain names. IDNs are domain names (domains) for which users have submitted applications using the local language character set.

The whois service for the domain name is available at the URL http://whois.nic.name . Domain names are registered by ICANN accredited registrars.

At the end of September 2007, security researchers accused the Global Name Registry of indulging hackers by charging for whois search services. Selling detailed information about registering $ 2 domain names for a domain was criticized because it prevented the community from making efforts to search for malware-spreading machines, zombies, and bot network management servers located in the name domain. The registry, however, offers free search services for users registered with Whois's extensive free access program.
