The university has programs for teaching architecture, engineering, science, business and agriculture. Founded in 1872 as an agricultural and mechanical college, the Virginia Polytechnic University remains one of the few public universities in the United States that maintains the cadet corps .
The story is notorious for April 16, 2007, when a 23-year-old student of Korean descent Cho Seung Hee, who studied at the English language department, opened fire at two-hour intervals, shot 32 people, and then committed suicide with a shot to the head.
Ratings
Virginia Polytechnic University, according to the America's Best Colleges 2008 rating of the US News & World Report, ranks 29th among public universities in the United States and 71st among all American universities.
