Stolpe, Manfred

In 1955-1959, Stolpe studied law at the University of Jena . Since 1959, he worked in the Lutheran Church in Berlin-Brandenburg, while studying at the Free University of Berlin .

Between 1962 and 1969 he was the head of the office for organizing church conferences in the GDR. Then he becomes the head of the secretariat of the Federation of Lutheran Churches of the German Democratic Republic. Having stayed in this post until 1981. At the same time, he was appointed by the World Council of Churches to the Commission on Foreign Relations.

In 1982, Stolpe became President of the Consistory of the Eastern Region of the Lutheran Church in Berlin-Brandenburg, and as a member of the Administrative Council for the organization of church conferences of the GDR, he was simultaneously one of the two Deputy Chairmen of the Federation of Lutheran Churches. He retains these posts until 1990 and 1989, respectively.

In July 1990, Stolpe joined the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) and was elected to the Brandenburg Landtag on October 14 of that year. Shortly afterwards, on November 1, 1990, he was appointed Prime Minister of Brandenburg. He was re-elected twice, in this position he remained until the end of June 2002.

After the 2002 Bundestag elections, Stolpe was invited to the federal government of Gerhard Schroeder as Minister of Transport, Construction and Housing. In this role, he was remembered primarily as the initiator of the development of the transport system of East Germany.
