Club career

Early years

Its origin is mixed: it is half Nigerian [4] and half Scot [5] . As a teenager, Agbonlahor moved to the Aston Villa Football Academy. His first season at Villa Academy was the 2002/03 season, in which he scored 9 goals in 18 games. In the 2003/04 season, he scored 35 goals in 29 matches [6] , a result comparable to the record of Darius Wassell , who scored 38 goals in the 1997/98 season. In the 2004/05 season, he began to periodically play for the reserve staff of Aston Villa, continuing to play for the youth team, for which this season he scored 18 goals in 22 matches. Thus, for 71 matches in the Aston Villa youth team he scored 62 goals.

From 2003 to 2006, Agbonlahor played 37 matches for the Aston Villa reservists, scoring 19 goals, including a hat-trick against the American goalkeeper Tim Howard in a match against the reserve team Manchester United, which ended with the score 3-0.

Agbonlahor received his first experience of playing for the main squad in October 2005, when he transferred to Sheffield Wensday on a leasehold for two months [7] .

Aston Villa

Agbonlahor made his debut in the Premier League on March 18, 2006 in a match against Everton at Goodison Park . He managed to score the ball in his debut match at the 63rd minute of the meeting, but this did not save the Villa from defeat with a score of 4: 1 [8] . In the 2017/2018 season, he played 6 matches and scored one goal. He played his last match for Aston Villa on December 23, 2017 against Sheffield United. In March 2018, he announced his resignation from Aston Villa after the season ended after 17 years at the club. In March 2019, the striker announced the end of his career as a professional football player. [9]

Team Career

On September 20, 2006, Agbonlahor received an invitation to play for the Nigeria U-20 national team in a match against Rwanda. He refused this offer, although he did not completely deny the possibility of playing for the Nigeria national team in the future [10] . However, later he began to connect his future with the England team [11] [12] .

On September 28, 2006, Agbonlahor received the first call to the England youth team (under 21 years old), and on October 6, he replaced the match against the German youth team.

In September 2007, Stuart Pearce challenged Agbonlahor to the England youth team [13] . Gabriel scored his first goal for the England youth team against the Montenegrin youth team, in which the British won 3-0.

On February 1, 2008, Fabio Capello published a list of 23 England players for the match against Switzerland , which included Agbonlahor [14] , although due to a hamstring injury he missed this meeting [15] .

Agbonlahor was also called up for the English national team versus the US national team [16] and Trinidad and Tobago [17] in May-June 2008, but did not enter the field.

On November 15, 2008, he again received a call to the national team from Fabio Capello for the upcoming match against the German national team , along with his three Aston Villa teammates, Ashley Young , Curtis Davis and Gareth Barry . On November 19, he entered the starting lineup of the England national team against the German national team and spent 76 minutes on the field. Agbonlahor’s teammate John Terry praised Gabriel’s performance in this match, saying in a post-match interview that “playing against Agbonlahor is a real nightmare” [18] .
