He studied with Bartholomew and Polachek at the Vienna Academy of Music , in 1926 he successfully toured abroad. Two years later he was accepted into the orchestras of the Vienna Philharmonic and the State Opera , since 1932 he taught at the Academy, where he trained a number of famous Austrian clarinetists, among whom - Alfred Boskovsky . Karl Esterreicher was also a student of Vlach. He even took his place as a lecturer at the Vienna Academy for a short while after the death of his teacher, but later on completely transferred to the conducting field.
Vlach is one of the largest representatives of the Vienna school of clarinet playing in the 20th century, which had a great influence on the development of wind performance. Its performance was distinguished by the beauty of sound and precise control of sound production. Vlach made a series of recordings, most clearly showing his qualities in the A-dur Mozart Quintet. In 1954, the Vienna Mozart Society awarded the clarinetist a medal.
