Rock Painting in the Sierra de San Francisco


Rock paintings in the Sierra de San Francisco ( Spanish Sierra de San Francisco ) are prehistoric rock paintings found in the state of Baha-California in Mexico . The images are made on the ceilings and walls of stone caves. They were first discovered by Jesuit Francisco Javier in the 18th century. Access for tourists to the drawings is limited, since this monument of art, consisting of approximately 250 individual monuments, is taken under protection by the Mexican state.

The time of creation of the drawings refers to the period between the 1100th and 1300th years BC. e. According to ancient legends, the cave paintings created a race of giants. This opinion was tried to be confirmed by the fact that the size of the images of some figures of people reached 2 meters. Images in their genre affiliation is religious and ritual. On the pictures are found: weapons, animals (rabbit, puma, lynx, deer, ibex or mountain sheep, whale, turtle, tuna, sardine, octopus, eagle and pelican); non-attributable elements of various shapes are also presented. Although they researched and tried to link the images with the culture of nomad hunters of northern Mexico and southern US , there are significant differences between them and the art of these peoples.
