Story

The doctor is going to take Rosa to TARDIS in Naples in 1860, but he is mistaken in calculations and lands in Cardiff 1869. In the undertaker's house, Gabriel Snead, the corpse of the old woman was covered with blue smoke, and she killed her grandson Redpuff, after which she came to the hall where Charles Dickens was speaking . She blew smoke again, frightening the entire audience, which attracted the attention of the Doctor and Rose. Gabriel and his maid Gwyneth take the corpse. They also abduct Rosa since she saw too much. Charles agrees to help the Doctor, and they ride a carriage for Gabriel, Gwyneth and Rosa.

At the funeral home, Rosa wakes up among the living corpses of Redpuff and his grandmother. The doctor arrives at the house and realizes that he is built on a crack in space and time, and the blue vapor is the creatures that penetrated the crack. Using Gwyneth, Doctor, Rosa, Charles and Gabriel arrange a conversation with spirits who call themselves gels. It turns out that they died in the Time War , but now they can use the dead people for resurrection. The doctor agrees and suggests using Gwyneth as a bridge so that the helts move to our world.

When the process begins, the Doctor and the others saw that there were much more gelts than they thought. Their real goal is not only dead, but also living people. Outside, Charles saw that the helts did not tolerate gas. The doctor turns on the gas to maximum, and the helts are evicted from the corpses. Gwyneth cannot bring the helts back, but she can delay them in the basement. To do this, she explodes herself and the gels. As soon as the Doctor and Rosa return to the TARDIS, Charles thanks them for their help and promises to complete the “ Secret of Edwin Drud ”. But the Doctor tells Rosa that he will not have time to finish writing, as he will die within a year. The doctor and Rosa fly off onto the TARDIS, and leave the startled Charles in the street. He walks the streets of Cardiff, greets everyone and shouts a phrase from his book Spirits of Christmas : “God bless us, all of us!”

Additional Information

  • When Gwyneth looked into Rosa’s mind, she was frightened and cut off the contact on the words "things you saw ... darkness ... big evil wolf." The phrase “Evil Wolf” is a story arch throughout this season, and its meaning is revealed in the episodes “ Evil Wolf ” and “ Paths Separate ” [1] .
  • Cardiff’s crack also appears in the series Noisy City , Utopia , The Last Time Lord , Stolen Earth , and The End of the Journey . And also in the spin-off series Torchwood , which also takes place in Cardiff [2] .
  • In the basement, the Doctor says that he saw the Fall of Troy, the fifth World War and "dragged boxes at the Boston tea party" (which was Barbara Wright in the series "The Invasion of the Far on Earth").
  • The Doctor's addiction to Dickens' tales is also noted when the Sixth Doctor mentions the Tale of Two Cities in the final installment of The Trial of the Time Lord .
  • The Tenth Doctor mentions “ Cardiff , 19th Century” in the “ End of the Journey ” series when he speaks with Torchwood's team member, Gwen Cooper . He asks her if her family is one of Cardiff’s old families. This is a reference to the same actress who plays Gwen in Torchwood and Gwyneth [2] [3] .
  • Charles Dickens will reappear in the series, in the Wedding River Song series of the sixth season [4] .

Production

The events of the series take place in Cardiff. However, the series was shot in Swansea [5] and Monmouth [6] , since there were not enough buildings in Cardiff that looked like buildings from the time of Queen Victoria [7] . Mark Gatiss and Russell T. Davis were born in Swansea.

Mark Gatiss noted in the Radio Times that the original script was darker and more alarming. [8] [9]

Simon Calow, who plays Charles Dickens, is well known not only as a writer, but also as an actor who often plays Dickens on television [10] .
