John of Crescentius ( Nomentan ; executed in 998 ) is the ruler of Rome (985–998) from the patrician clan of the Crescents , presumably the grandson of Theodora the Younger, son of Crescent (died in 984).

He obeyed Otto III when he elevated Gregory V to the popes . According to the Annals of Hildesheim , in 996 , Otton wanted to expel Crescence from Rome for the insults that he inflicted on Pope John XV , but the new pope persuaded the emperor to forgive Crescent. However, after Otto left Rome, Crescentius led a Roman uprising against Gregory and expelled him. He ascended to the papal throne of John XVI . I was looking for help from Byzantium . After the capture of Rome, Otto III executed Crescent.
