Biography
The future writer received her name in honor of two grandmothers - Eudora Andrews and Alice Welty. After the birth of the girl, Chestin's mother, Andrews Welty (1883-1966), forever left school and was engaged in the home and raising children. Yudora had two younger brothers. Family father Christian Webb Welty (1879-1931) spent his whole life working at Lamar Life insurance company, going from an insurance agent to a manager. The family loved books and did not spare money for their purchase. Reading was the girl’s favorite pastime. Yudora grew up in an atmosphere of love and affluence.
Udora Welty began her education at the University of Mississippi ( Eng. Mississippi University for Women ). After studying there for a year, she continued her studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and then studied at Columbia University's business school, graduating in 1930 .
After the death of her father in 1931, Eudora had to leave New York and return to Jackson, where she worked as a reporter for the Works Progress Administration agency, which provided public works as part of President Roosevelt's New Deal . The job forced her to travel all over the Mississippi, writing taking notes and taking photos, so she recognized all 82 counties of the state. The Udora's passion was photography. As a result of these trips, hundreds of photographs were taken that were later acquired by the state’s Department of History and Archives . es and History ).
Some of these photographs of Udora Welty, with permission from the Department of History and Archives, have been published. So there were two albums, "Time and Place, Mississippi during the Depression" ( Eng. One Time, One Place. Mississippi in the Depression. A Snapshot Album ; 1994 ) and "Rural Cemeteries" ( Eng. Country Churchyards ; 2000 ).
In 1936, she published her first short story, Death of a Traveling Salesman , which caught the attention of Catherine Ann Porter , who became a mentor for Walti and wrote a preface to Walti’s first short story collection, The Curtain of Green. ; 1941 ).
For the novel “ The Optimist's Daughter ” ( English The Optimist's Daughter ; 1972 ) Welty was awarded the Pulitzer Prize . Walti's other famous novels are Engagement in the Delta ( Eng. Delta Wedding ; 1946 ) and Lost Battles ( Eng. Losing Battles ; 1971 ).
In 1986 she was awarded the United States National Medal in the Arts.
An enthusiastic essay on the work of Welty was made by the writer Guy Davenport [3] . Eudora Mail is named after Eudora Welty, whose creators were impressed by the writer’s story “Why I live at the post office” ( Why I Live at the PO ).
