The Black Unit , 1849 ( Mi # 1; Sc # 1)

Johann Peter was born in 1812 in Melis (now Zella-Mehlis). Even in his youth, he moved to Munich, where he began working at the Zeitz firm as an engraver.

Hazenei is the author of the sketch of the first - "Black Unit" , issued in 1849 and is the first postage stamp in modern Germany [2] .

Subsequently, the drawing of the Bavaria stamp created by Hazenei served as a prototype for several others - in particular, for the “ Red Saxon Troika ” and a number of zemstvo postage stamps of Russia .

Johann Hazenei died in Munich in 1869.

Memory

In the city of Zella-Mehlis, where Hazenei was born, there is a street named after him, and a monument to the famous compatriot engraver was erected [3] .
