History

The team began at the end of the XIX century as a student team, the club received official status in 1927, immediately rising to leading places in Italy , constantly winning the championship and the country's cup. The first success in the European Cup came in 1981, then, under the guidance of American coach Terry Driscoll, Virtus reached the final, where he lost only one point to the Israeli Maccabi . Success in this tournament came after coming to the post of head coach Ettore Messina . Already in 1998, Virtus took the main European trophy, defeating the Greek AEK in the final, next year the final again, now with Zalgiris , but the luck was on the side of the Lithuanians. Two years later, in 2001, the victory was again, now the Taugres was defeated in the final. The following year, Virtus lost to the Greek Panathinaikos in the final, it was the last success, the main sponsor left the team - the Kinder plant, owned by the Ferrero chocolate factory, and financial problems began. In 2003, having finished the championship in Serie A on the 14th place out of 18 teams, Virtus went to the minor league, where he managed to get out in 2005, and two years later he won silver medals, losing gold to Siena. In 2009, the team managed to win the Challenge Cup . Currently plays in Series A2.
